Helenium ‘Loysderwieck’

Helenium_close_2This plant is still in bloom in the garden and it so reminds me of fall. Helenium ‘Loysderwieck’ is named after Loysder, the home town of the breeder, and wieck, the Dutch word for a windmill’s sale arm which so aptly describes the shape of the flowers. Autumnal hues are unusual for heleniums which usually bloom in bright shades of orange and yellow.  The blooms of this selection are very long lasting and vary in shade from deep tangerine with chocolately-purple edges to soft amber-yellow with milk chocolate colored tips.

This plant has incredible flower power, is ideal for cutting and easy to grow. The prominent central discs are attractive to bees and butterflies. This plant is not yet widely available in the U.S., but can be purchased as bare root divisions in spring 2010 from Holtex Enterprises, one of our licensed growers.

This underused helenium selection has drumstick shaped ray petals that begin a chocolate-rose color and age to deep rosy-pink with yellow centers.  The center (disk) of the flower begins lemony-yellow and ages to a dark chocolaty-red. Each cluster of blooms is held on strong, drought tolerant stems making for quite a specimen in any garden.
