Cornus Watermelon Sugar™
Pink, green and white leaves and huge flowers.
Cornus Watermelon Sugar™ comes to us from our friends at Van Heesbeen Nursery in the Netherlands. We love this new Korean dogwood for its tri-color variegation after flowering, vigor, and large, showy flowers.
The foliage emerges green, and is followed by large, pure white star shaped flowers. As the season progresses, the foliage develops a wonderful variegation, beginning with white flecks and aging with a pink blush to the tips, giving it an overall tri-color effect similar to Salix Hakuro-Nishiki. This wonderful variegation gets stronger and stronger, as the strawberry-red fruits form in late summer and remains until true autumn, when the foliage gets darker red.
The flowers age and form typical strawberry-like fruits that stay on until a bird eats them or they fall off, giving fall and often winter interest. The bark will mottle, as all Cornus kousas do, as the tree ages and matures.
This is a true four-season tree!
