Aesculus Mystic Ruby™
Reddish pink flowers and extreme hardiness.
Mystic Ruby™ is a small tree only growing to about 18’ tall and 8’wide in 20 years. It has better than average late season foliage characteristics, though it typically gets a little leaf blotch in late summer. It does set a fair amount of fruit (buckeye nuts).
Probably the most exceptional aspect of the tree is its hardiness. It has outperformed all other red and pink flowered Aesculus selections in SE Wisconsin. When we had severe winters in 2013-14 and again in 2019-20, Mystic Ruby™ came through unscathed when other red and pink flowered buckeyes were winter damaged.

Landscape Use
Origin
Mystic Ruby™ was selected by Aaron Jambura in 2003 from a block of Aesculus glabra (Ohio Buckeye) seedlings at Johnson’s Nursery. He noticed the tree had standout, reddish-pink flowers, unlike the typical yellow flowers of the Ohio Buckeye. The plant is likely a hybrid with Aesculus pavia, the Red Buckeye.
